Must Do Ride

Arizona Highways rated the Saguaro National Monument as one of the top bike rides in Arizona in the March 2008 issue on page 21. It was not voted the best ridefor the mileage but for its beautiful desert scenery. This is a beautiful loop on the east side of Tucson, Arizona and the cycling blog of Ride-Strong.com would love to share this desert beauty with you. If you are ever in Tucson, AZ it is a must ride.

Lance Armstrong trained for the Tour de France in Tucson, AZ but you don’t have to be an elite athlete to hit the road in Arizona. Whether you ride a Madone6.9 Pro Trek or a Schwinn Stingray with a banana seat and sissy bar, there’s a road-biking route in this state that’s just right for you. Ride on.” Christine Maxa of Arizona Highways

As you can see from the profile above there is a good little climb in the middle of the ride that will get your heart pumping.

There is a guard gate as you enter the park. When the park is open there is a charge of $5.00 for cyclist and is well worth the cost. For more information call 520-733-5153 or visit www.nps.gov/sagu

This is really a great ride without having to struggle for a long period of time. I usually do the loop before and/or after heading out to Colossal Cave. There’s always someone out there if you need assistance, but not that many that it’s a problem. Cars are present but they are driving slow. Watch out for the coyotes though. I’ve been close to hitting a couple of them while decending.

Right next door to where I grew up! The Saguaro National “Monument” is how the older locals know it. The first picture looks to be the hillside where I can slow down, look north and west and still pick out my folk’s horse barn in the area just west of Freeman Rd. and north of Twin Hills, even though it is much more populated than the days when my brother and I played, rode our horses and hiked around in the desert out there. Now, at 44, I really enjoy passing that spot, looking over and remembering the days when NO ONE but a handful of families lived out there.

After a long day at work, It is absolutely great to hop on Old Spanish Trail from my house, head up and hit the loop for a quick out and back, in the early evenings when the sun is setting! I couldn’t agree more… It is a must ride while in Tucson!

Don’t forget this is one half of a National Park. There is a ride from S.N.P. East (including the loop if you want to ride it.) to S.N.P. West that will definitely test your legs AND lungs. This is an 86 mile ride that takes you through the City of Tucson. S.N.P. East is very pretty and this ride is definitely stimulating. I usually bypass it to ride out to Colossal Cave and back.
