Lance Armstrong won’t be racing in the Tour de Georgia 2009

The Tour de Georgia has been canceled because of lack of money.

This is a bummer for US cycling. It would have been cool to see Lance race in the states on his come back trail leading up to the Tour de France.

This is absolutely terrible. Not just that we won’t see Lance and the other cool guys in the US, but I was just up in Northern Georgia over the summer. The TdG brings a lot of revenue to the entire state. I guess it really speaks to how the economy is really doing.

I remember last year the Tour de Tucson was threatened when the sponsor, a mortgage company, went bankrupt. I guess I feel pretty lucky that we still have it.

Yes I know. I worked for First Magnus who was the mortgage company that sponsored Tour de Tucson.

Hopefully the economy can rebound so we can see the race back in 2010.

I’m afraid that we’re going to see more situations like this in the near future. The global economy is hurting and it’s going to have a drastic effect on any event that relies on sponsorship. It will eventually turn around, but I don’t think we’re ever going to see it like it has been. I think the cuts we see will be long lasting. It is sad.

I guess the really sad part is that everyone is having to go into self preservation mode. I don’t blame people, but it’s sad to see donations drop so much. From corporate sponsorships to individuals donating to local charities. It’s actually quite frightening and I don’t think most people realize how many people are truly being affected. Cycling will be no different than the auto industry. I know I can’t afford a new bike right now, even though I could use one. That’s money lost to the bike company. My money lost is someone’s job lost.
