someday Ill get there. as a beginner any help with hills is appreciated. 14 MPH seems Like a pipe dream at this point. 6 MPH is more like it for me right now but im getting there. I live in the blueridge moutains area and you have to do hills to get anywhere around here. Ican do it almost there is my mantra.

Great article. I will possibly get the book as my climbing needs work all the time. It has gotten much better over the years. The photo is great! Nice bike and the scenery/ride is along a "must do while in Tucson, AZ" ride. It is the first part of a great but short (approx 1.2 mile) training climb about halfway around the Saguaro National Monument loop. There are also very short but great hill training grades (15 - 20% or slightly more) in the foothills of Tucson around the Kolb/Wilmot/Craycroft area, just north and just south of Sunrise. Then you have the ever incredible long climb of Mt Lemmon or the shorter but very demanding Gates Pass option that should truly be ridden in both directions to fully appreciate its grit. We are blessed with some of the best training & riding opportunities for cyclists of all levels here! Plus the winter weather to back it up. This is one native Tucsonan that doesn't take it for granted at all.

I get a fair amount of hill work over near my mothers house, not as much where I am just 30 mins west. I live by the mantra of "attack this hills." I enter them at a reasonable level and try to maintain a steady pace until they drive me out of the saddle, then I go for it. Usually pegs my heart rate monitor and leaves me gasping for air but when I reach the top I always have to wait for my sister so I get a good rest in there :-)

Dave, See you next summer in the Hill Country. I too love climbing, you have to around here, there's not many flat routes, except East of Austin. Then you have the wind to contend with as there's nothing but corn fields and cow pastures.

I just keep chanting to myself.... 'I love hills, I love hills, I love hills'. Really what I'm thinking is 'I love going DOWN hills!!!'
Picking a focal point partially up the hill and breaking it down into smaller parts definitely helps.

Great information.
I love climbing, but don't have any chance to train much. Most of the roads out here are flat as a pancake and those that aren't dip down more than they rise up.
I'll be moving to the hill country outside San Antonio next summer and I'll have a better chance to work on my climbing.
