Bike To Work Week is May 12th - 16th

With gas prices at an all time high and predicted hit $4.00 per gallon commuting to work has many benefits.

In 2003, cars idling in traffic wasted 5 billion gallons of fuel. Furthermore, the average American spends 50 hours per year stuck in traffic. (source) Wouldn’t spending some of that time on a bicycle be more enjoyable?

Still not convinced yet? What about your health? Bicycling benefits your physical and mental health by providing sustained, moderate aerobic exercise. But don’t take our word for it…

“Significant health benefits can be obtained by including a moderate amount of physical activity on most, if not all, days of the week.

Physical activity reduces the risk of premature mortality in general, and of coronary heart disease, hypertension, colon cancer, and diabetes mellitus in particular. Physical activity also improves mental health and is important for the health of muscles, bones, and joints.”

- Audrey F, Manley, M.D., M.P.H., Former Surgeon General of the United States (source: Center for Disease Control)

I’d love to commute this week, but the weather has been so bad these last two days, it’s nearly impossible to ride.

I will start soon, though.

Biking to work is also fun, you actually meet people (instead of being sealed up in your car cursing at them) and it’s fun. Did I say fun twice I like fun.

I was planning to start this week, but things are not working out. I work second shift and only have a short time to spend with my wife. I will most likely go Thursday.

I love biking to work. I began biking to my job in my teens, when I babysat. It’s something I’ve done on and off for a lot of years. Just makes a lot of sense. When I bike to work, I save money (gas, mainitenance). When I bike to work, I arrive in a good mood, because of the exercise and the fun of riding. I’m able to avoid the main roads for most of my commute, so it truly is a pleasant ride. And I always take a longer route home, to increase my mileage. Some of the most enjoyable trips were my nighttime rides home when I worked a 2nd shift years ago. The main hazard then was a great number of skunks!
(Yes, I wore reflective clothing & used lights!)

Took daughter to the doc Thursday and did not get home in time to commute. Even though I don’t like to commute on Friday (A lot of idiots and drunks on the road when I get off work 2nd shift), I tried the new paved bike path. It got me off the road for the worst part of my commute home. Now that I made my first commute I will ride 3 to 4 times a week.
